A new operator survey conducted by Kaleido in September 2023 found that a lack of in-house security knowledge and testing capabilities are seen as the main constraints to implementing mobile network security, with over 40% of respondents noting they have only a limited toolset to mitigate signalling threats.

Kaleido anticipates operator losses from fraud and security incidents to rise from $35 billion in 2022 to $45 billion in 2025, with weaknesses inherent in interconnect protocols and mobile operators’ strategic approaches to security highlighting a continued challenge to secure mobile roaming. Indeed 50% of surveyed operators consider roaming the most difficult element of 5G security to implement correctly.

Much discussion is currently underway to determine how best to deliver 5G roaming while maintaining high security and services continuity. During a live webinar on November 30th, Kaleido, in conjunction with Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier and T-Mobile, explored this to identify the difference between a security strategy that meets minimum requirements versus a strategy that provides market-leading protection against current and evolving threats.
